Black Diamond MIPS Vision Helmet

Most climbing helmets are designed to handle a direct vertical impact. The Black Diamond Vision MIPS goes further, being built to manage the rotational forces that come from the angled impacts that are far more common in real falls. That's what MIPS (Multidirectional Impact Protection System) adds: a layer inside the helmet that moves independently on impact, absorbing and redirecting oblique forces before they translate into rotational violence to the brain. It's a meaningful upgrade in protection, not a marketing checkbox.

The shell itself is Black Diamond's most durable foam construction in their helmet line-up. EPP (expanded polypropylene) foam is a material chosen for its ability to withstand repeated minor impacts without degrading, unlike EPS which compresses permanently on its first significant hit. An EPS foam puck sits inside for additional impact absorption, while the ABS outer shell resists the scuffs, scrapes, and drops that accumulate over years of regular climbing.

Coverage is a key differentiator for the Vision MIPS. The improved side and back protection extends further than most foam helmets at this price point, meeting proposed UIAA requirements relevant for trad and alpine climbers where rockfall can come from any direction, not just directly overhead.

Furthermore, the integrated headlamp clips are low-profile enough that they don't catch on slings when racking up or moving through terrain a small but useful detail on early morning alpine starts or routes that push into the evening. Ventilation ports are positioned to keep airflow moving during sustained exertion in warmer conditions, and the internal suspension system with adjustable chin strap gives a secure, non-bulky fit.
